Palm oil company pollutes river

Palm oil company pollutes river

JAMBI: The West Tanjung Jabung Environmental Impact Management Agency has investigated whether unprocessed waste from palm oil producer PT Indo Sawit Subur contaminated the Papalik river in Muara Papalik district, killing most of the fish there.

"Our team has conducted a series of investigations and taken samples of the waste, which are now being examined by a laboratory in Jambi," agency head Mardi Barus said.

The agency is still waiting for the laboratory results.
He said the investigatory team found the Pengabuan and Benanak rivers passed the company's compound, then fed into the Papalik river, strengthening the agency's assumption that the palm oil producer was involved in contaminating the river.

The company did not give any comment on the issue. -- JP
